I Get This ONE Question ALL The Time

🌿 **Herbal Spotlight: Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga or Actaea racemosa)** 🌿

For all cycles of life, Nature offers remedies steeped in wisdom and tradition. Black Cohosh is the NUMBER ONE most talked about herb when it comes to perimenopause.

For those who’re hesitant to use HRT (prescription estrogen therapy), or for those looking to treat their symptoms in a more natural way, herbal medicine can be a great option. Often there are fewer risks and side effects, and there are many cases where it can be used effectively (even when hormone levels haven’t been tested).

Black Cohosh’s therapeutic actions stem from compounds that have a modulating effect on hormone receptors, particularly estrogen. Black cohosh is unique among estrogenic herbs because it’s known as a SERM (selective estrogen receptor modulator). Unlike prescription estrogen therapy which uniformly stimulates all estrogen receptors (increasing estrogen), a SERM selectively modulates estrogen receptors in various tissues, potentially offering the benefits of estrogen in certain areas (like the bones and brain) while not overstimulating other areas (like the breasts and uterus – riskier places).

Black Cohosh offers a blend of nutrients such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium – all essential for maintaining bone health, which can be a concern during perimenopause. The herb can be taken in various forms: capsules, tinctures, and teas are most common. Key to remember with herbs is that in order for it to work, it must be the right herb, in the right form & dose, at the right time, for the right person.

Traditional Chinese Medicine texts cite Black cohosh as cooling, cherished for its capabilities to clear heat and pacify what TCM labels as “fire toxins” (think hot flashes). If Chinese Medicine interests you, download my TCM & Perimenopause course here.

However, as with all herbs, Black Cohosh is not a universal remedy. Some individuals may experience mild side effects, including stomach upset or headaches. Those with liver concerns or those on medications affecting the liver should approach Black Cohosh with caution and always under the guidance of a healthcare provider.
