As an ND, I encounter a ton of questions about women’s health. A topic that has been recurrent lately is: Can anxiety be a symptom of perimeno?
Lets first understand what perimeno is: the transitional phase that a woman’s body undergoes leading up to menopause, when menstruation ceases entirely. This period can start in a woman’s 30s & last for several years
Hormonal changes are a hallmark of perimeno. Estrogen is one example & it has a direct relationship with the neurotransmitter serotonin, often dubbed the “feel-good” NT. Imbalances in serotonin levels can influence mood & potentially lead to feelings of anxiety
Some studies suggest women might be more susceptible to anxiety & mood disorders during perimenopause due to these hormonal shifts
Natural Interventions for Anxiety:
1. Balanced Nutrition: A diet rich in whole foods, omega-3s, B vitamins & magnesium can play a crucial role in stabilizing mood. Foods such as fatty fish, nuts, seeds & leafy greens are usually good choices, but many women benefit from testing food sensitivities in order to guide dietary choices during peri-meno
2. Herbal Remedies: Herbs like Black Cohosh have traditionally been used to alleviate symptoms of peri-meno, including anxiety. Always consult a healthcare practitioner before using herbs
3. Movement: Regular physical activity can increase endorphin levels, the body’s natural mood lifters. Find movement you enjoy & make it a routine
4. Mindfulness: Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation can help manage anxiety. Even spending a few minutes each day in focused breathing can make a difference
5. BHRT: This is an option some women consider to help balance fluctuating hormones. It involves using hormones that are chemically identical to the ones produced by the ovaries. You must consult with a qualified healthcare provider before starting such treatments
While peri-meno is a natural phase in a woman’s life, it doesn’t mean one should silently endure the associated challenges
