5 Weird Little Myths About Mental Health

I read a survey recently by the National Mental Health Association that found, unbelievably:

-71% of people believe mental illness (MI) is caused by emotional weakness

-65% believe MI is caused by bad parenting

-35% believe MI is caused by sinful behaviour

-43% believe MI is the fault of the individual

Needless to say, many people hold outdated and incorrect beliefs about MI.

It’s no wonder that for the most part, those who need help hide their personal struggles and are afraid to confide in others for fear of alienation or other consequences.

Here are 5 common Mental Health Myths, debunked:

MYTH: People who are mentally ill are dangerous or violent

TRUTH: Those suffering from MI are actually 2.5x more likely to be the victims of violence rather than a perpetrator

MYTH: Those with mental health issues are less intelligent

TRUTH: MI affects people regardless of social status, income, or education, and frequently affects many people will higher than average IQs – think of all the famous writers, musicians and scientist who suffered with MI who also made amazing contributions to culture and history

MYTH: Most mentally ill people end up homeless because they can’t hold down a job

TRUTH: Every day, people mange MI while still holding jobs, raising kids, having relationships and are involved in the communities

MYTH: People with MI have some kind of character flaw or weakness

TRUTH: MI has nothing to do with willpower or strength of character. It may be that there are physiological issues that needs to be addressed, like hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies and the like (my specialty). It may be that more support is needed, or that new skills need to be learned in order to deal with a life event (counselling or self-help books are great for this)

MYTH: MI is a life sentence

TRUTH: Most mental health conditions can be treated with a combination of natural remedies, counselling, lifestyle changes and/or medication if necessary (this is what you can expect if you choose to work with me). The most important step is to acknowledge that help is needed

Now is the time to start taking care of your mental health, one little step at a time.
