Bone Broth for Pregnant Moms (And Everyone Else too!)

Bone broth is a nutrient rich infusion, made out of boiling the bones of healthy animals and adding veggies, herbs and spices. It is one of the top foods that a Mom can consume to promote a healthy pregnancy.

Here are five BIG reasons pregnant Moms, and anyone else for that matter, should add bone broth to their diet

  1. Loaded with Healthy Minerals

Minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, are essential for your baby to grow healthy, strong bones. In pregnancy a growing baby will take the minerals it needs right out of Mama’s bones, so unless Mama is consuming a large amount of mineral-rich foods during her pregnancy, she is at risk of becoming mineral deficient, raising the risk of such conditions as osteopenia and osteoporosis later in life. Symptoms of mineral deficiencies are numerous, but most commonly include fatigue and constipation – two problems that pregnant Mamas already struggle with. Drinking bone broth on a daily basis is a great (dairy-free!) way to get those minerals replenished in Mama’s system

  1. Collagen-packed

Often touted as the “beauty nutrient”, collagen helps the body tighten sagging skin, firms wrinkles, makes hair shiny and strong, and can even reduce the appearance of cellulite. Supplementing collagen-rich foods in the diet has been shown to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, as well as prevent them from forming in the first place. A growing baby also requires lots of collagen from the very earliest stages – collagen is essential in helping your baby’s skin and neurological systems form.

  1. Full of Glucosamine and Chondroitin

You may not have heard of these two nutrients, but they are essential for the proper health of all the joints and cartilage in the body. A growing baby uses these nutrients to help form its joints, including those of the spine (very important!). These nutrients are also essential for Mama’s joints, as pregnancy can place added strain on them – weight gain, changing body mechanics, and hormones designed to increase joint flexibility are all joint stressors. Getting extra glucosamine and chondroitin in the diet are very helpful in reducing joint injuries during pregnancy.

  1. High in Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Most pregnant women are aware of the increased need for protein in pregnancy – the recommended daily intake jumps from approximately 46g per day to 71g! It can be difficult for some women to eat this much protein every day – an average cup of bone broth contains 10g, so by drinking one small cup, you will be much closer to the daily goal.

Amino acids are essential for many bodily functions – from immune system regulation (helping us fight off colds and flus, for instance), to influencing mood and digestion via our neurotransmitters, to helping us get a good nights sleep.

  1. Contains No Negative Nutrients, like Preservatives and Fillers

This is a biggie – so many foods that we consume are loaded with substances that actually rob us of our nutrition, steal our anti-oxidants, and increase toxicity in our bodies. Bone broth, when prepared correctly at home, is completely natural and preservative free, helping to keep our toxic load low. Mom’s detoxification systems are busy metabolizing the increased hormone levels in her system during pregnancy, in addition to everything else that we must detoxify on a daily basis (pesticides, air pollution, water toxins, etc.), so avoiding the intake of toxins becomes even more important.

Most grocery stores sell the bones you will need, simply ask someone in the meat department where to find them. Using bones from an animal raised without the use of antibiotics and hormones is best.
